CHESS WITHOUT BORDERS part II
An exhibition and celebration of chess held on Wurundjeri) and Boon Wurrung peoples of the eastern Kulin Nations land.
Working with the wonderful team at Museums Victoria I transformed part of Melbourne's iconic Immigration Museum grounds into chess-themed spaces, along with an exciting schedule of curated events. It was an invitation to chess lovers, whether seasoned players or beginners, to test their skills, participate in simuls and learn about chess history and design inspirations.
I am grateful to the wonderful team who worked with me to deliver a wonderful coming together of the chess community in Melbourne.
ATAB presents some of our favourite moments from Chess Without Borders
Dark Horse Chess
is a Melbourne-based chess coaching organisation involved in running a wide variety of chess-related activities. In particular, we specialise in providing high-quality individual chess coaching as well as fun and engaging lunch-time chess classes in primary and secondary schools across Melbourne.
Similarly, Northern Star Chess came about from the desire to provide quality chess learning experience in the Northern suburbs of Victoria, by actively promoting chess in friendly tournaments amongst local school communities.
We were honoured to have Cassandra Lim, Jody Middleton (Dark Horse) and Nick Ilic (Northern Star) join us on the weekend and take on 32 participants of all ages in the simul events.
Acid Chess Club
a monthly gathering of chess lovers over drinks hosted by the amazing Benji who also helped coordinate the chess tournaments and setting the vibes with the music.
The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam
"But helpless Pieces of the Game He plays
Upon this Chequer-board of Nights and Days;
Hither and thither moves, and checks, and slays;
And one by one back in the Closet lays."
“The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam” is a long lyric poem in quatrains (four-line stanzas)translated by Edward Fitzgerald from a manuscript of Persian verse attributed to Omar Khayyam, a 12th-century Persian mathematician and philosopher, The Rubaiyat contains pithy observations on complex subjects such as love, death, and the existence of God and an afterlife.
The Great Migration
A.Kid tells his stories through the painstaking medium of woodblock carving. By hand, he chisels his social, political, and global musings into blocks of plywood. The result - limited editions of raw, powerful works of art printed from the original wood block. We commissioned a
custom wood block mural that represents the movement of people from 7 continents in search of a new home.
